“Russ,” a voice called out. Russell looked through the crowd. He could see his old buddy John walking with his family.

“John!” Russell exclaimed. The two hadn’t seen each other in over a year. Russell approached and held out his hand. The men gave firm hand shakes. John looked around for Anne.

“Where’s the wife?”

“She took Jack and Caroline to get soft pretzels and drinks,” he said. Russell gave a hug to John’s wife and eldest daughter and shook the hands of his sons.

“Everything still in process? Are the children officially part of the Paraday family now?” John asked. He knew the intimate details of what the couple had gone through. John had been Russell’s confidante since their days as UCLA. The men had been successful in their career paths, with Russell surprising everyone by becoming a Hollywood producer. He had exceeded everyone’s expectations. It seemed he had been lucky in life except in matters of the heart. His marriage had been a frequent source of pain, and the disappointment could not be avoided. John looked intensely at his friend. He hoped time had improved things. Especially since their family had expanded.

“How is she?” Barb asked.

“Better! Her focus is on the children. She’s been pretty stable because of it.”

“How about you?” John interjected.

“Ok, I guess,” Russell reluctantly answered. John gave a nod. The last time they spoke, Anne had stopped being intimate with him. The men had bonded through a mutual feeling of disconnect with their spouses. Russell tried to cope with the change in his marriage. John listened, giving valuable advice and speaking on his own marital issues and decreased sexual access. Russell wished he had more time. He and John had some catching up to do.

“Listen…Me and the wife are having a small get together. Later tonight. We’re going to have a roast. Drinks. Music. You should stop by.”

“That sounds like fun, but I have to fly out tonight. Issues on the set. Maybe when I get back.”
